Many people buy one bluebird house only to become disappointed to find that swallows have taken over that house. Swallows are a native and wonderful bird. In fact, they are considered better buggers than bluebirds since they eat more insects. Thus, the highly recommended thing to do is to buy two houses and place them 10 - 30 feet apart. The tree swallows will occupy one house and bluebirds will occupy the other. Swallows are very territorial and will not allow another pair of swallows to nest in the second house. They will, however, allow bluebirds to nest in it, for the bluebirds are not seen as a threat to the swallows. Tree Swallows will aggressively defend their houses against other predators such as house sparrows and starlings, they will even defend the bluebirds' nest-site when placed nearby. Tree swallows have a definite preference for nesting boxes facing east. If bluebirds move in first, the same applies. They won't let more bluebirds in, but they will allow swallows to nest.
